Development of a rhythmic auditory stimulation applicaion for patients with stroke

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop an Android phone-based rhythmic auditory stimulation application for patients with stroke.

Methods: We developed an Android phone-based rhythmic auditory stimulation application on the Android 7.1.1 operating system, using the MIT App Inventor 2 development tool. This application measures the 10-meter walking time and step time through the touch screen and timer functions, and calculates cadence and step length. In addition, using the calculated step time, rhythmic auditory stimulation could be provided immediately. For healthy adults and patients with stroke, 10-m walking time, step time, cadence and step length were obtained with the application. The patients with stroke walked again with rhythmic auditory stimulation and their 10-m walking time was measured. Besides, these data were delivered immediately to the researcher through the transmission function of the application.

Results: With the application, we could measure the above-mentioned parameters and immediately provide rhythmic auditory stimulation to the subjects according to their step time. In the healthy adult group, the 10-meter walking time was 7.76¡¾0.95 seconds; step time, 0.50¡¾0.07 seconds; cadence, 118.7¡¾10.8; and step length, 0.66¡¾0.06 meters. The patient group's 10-meter walking time was 22.0¡¾11.3 seconds; step time, 0.64¡¾0.21 seconds; cadence, 96.4¡¾18.5; and step length, 0.35¡¾0.15 meters. In the patient group, with automatic rhythmic auditory stimulation, their 10-meter walking time was 20.5¡¾11.5 seconds, which was shorter than the time without auditory stimulation (p<0.05). Additionally, the measured values could be automatically transmitted to the researcher via social media.

Conclusions: This rhythmic auditory stimulation application can be used to assist gait training in these patients.
